About Nari Shakti Puraskar Awards
- The Nari Shakti Puraskar is awarded by the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
- The award is given annually to individuals and institutions that have made significant contributions to the empowerment of women, especially those who are vulnerable or marginalized.
- The recipients of the Nari Shakti Puraskar are announced by the 20th of February each year.

Nari Shakti Puraskar Eligibility
Below are some important points related to nari shakti award eligibility criteria.
- Only individuals are eligible for the Nari Shakti Puraskar.
- The applicant must be at least 25 years old as of July 1 of the award year.
- Previous recipients of the award, including the Stree Shakti Puraskar, are not eligible to apply.
- The award is given for outstanding work related to the economic and social empowerment of women or related areas.
- The award is given to individuals who have encouraged women’s participation in decision-making roles, promoted women’s skill development in traditional and non-traditional sectors, facilitated basic amenities for rural women, and contributed significantly to women’s safety and security, health and wellness, education, skill development, life skills, respect and dignity.
- The award may also be given to a State or Union Territory that has significantly improved the Child Sex Ratio (CSR).
- Normally, the award is not given posthumously, unless the proposal was submitted before the individual’s death in accordance with the guidelines.
Nari Shakti Puraskar Nominations
Nominations for the nari shakti award shall be invited from:
- State Governments, Union Territory Administrations, and concerned Central Ministries/Departments can nominate individuals for the award.
- Non-Governmental Organizations, Universities/Institutions, and Private and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) can also nominate individuals for the award.
- The Selection Committee may recommend an individual or institution for the award with sufficient justification, without a nomination.
- Both self-nominations and recommendations for the award are considered.
Nari Shakti Puraskar Selection Process
1. The Ministry of Women and Child Development will form a Screening Committee to evaluate the nominations for the awards. The committee will consist of:
- Chairperson: Joint Secretary, Ministry of Women and Child Development (ex-officio)
- Member: Domain expert in the field of women’s issues/gender expert, Ministry of Women and Child Development
- Member: Director/DS level officer, Ministry of Urban Development, Rural Development, Health, Panchayati Raj, Home Affairs, NITI Aayog
- Member: Representative of CII and FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO)
- Member Secretary: Concerned Director/Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Women and Child Development
2. The Ministry of Women and Child Development will also establish a Selection Committee to choose the awardees based on the recommendations of the Screening Committee. The committee will include:
- Chairperson: Hon’ble Minister for Women and Child Development (ex-officio)
- Member: Hon’ble Minister of State for Women and Child Development (ex-officio)
- Member: Secretary, Ministry of Women & Child Development (ex-officio)
- Member: Special or Additional Secretary, Ministry of Women & Child Development (ex-officio)
- Member: Secretary or his nominee from Ministry of Rural Development (ex-officio)
- Co-opted members: Five National level eminent Individuals/Representatives of Institutions of National Importance/Representatives of relevant Ministries/Departments
- Member Secretary: Joint Secretary (Women Awards), Ministry of Women & Child Development
3. The Selection Committee has the discretion to consider individuals, institutions, or organizations beyond those nominated or recommended before the deadline for nominations/recommendations.

The presentation of the award will take place during a special ceremony or function in New Delhi on March 8th, International Women’s Day.
