History of National Doctors Day in India
As a way to recognize the contribution of the former Chief Minister of Bengal, Dr. BC Roy, to serving humanity, the day was first observed in 1991. A highly regarded and exemplary doctor, Dr. Roy made a significant contribution to the medical community over the course of his career. On July 1, 1882, he was born, and on the same date in 1962, he died.

The honour of Bharat Ratna was also bestowed upon him on February 4, 1961. Among the medical institutions he established were Jadavpur T. B. Hospital, Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital, Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital, Chittaranjan Seva Sadan, Victoria Institution (college), and Chittaranjan Seva Sadan for women and children. According to British Medical journals, he was also referred to as the first medical consultant in India who had more success and dedication than his contemporaries in several fields.

Our medical doctors work tirelessly day and night to ensure our well-being and we celebrate this day to acknowledge and thank them for their efforts. It is more important than ever to thank them for working around the clock to ensure our safety during this pandemic. Many of them sacrificed their own lives to serve our country. The fact that they worked meticulously throughout the crisis without breaking, risking their lives in the process, speaks volumes about their dedication and spirit.

How is the National Doctor’s Day Celebrated?
The Government and non-government healthcare organizations have been celebrating National Doctor’s Day to recognize the contributions of doctors for several years. Several events and activities are organized by healthcare organizations to mark this day. A big event is organized each year by the Rotary Club of the North Calcutta and North East Calcutta Social & Welfare Organization on Doctor’s Day.
To spread the message that quality medical services can be obtained without cost by the public, health care organizations organize free medical checkup camps. These camps also showcase doctor rotations. People are now being made aware of the importance of health check-ups, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases through various discussion programs.
A general health screening camp is also held to assess the health status of the poor and elderly, provide health counseling, and to hold health nutrition talks.
In addition to various activities to make people aware of the priceless role of doctors, there are free blood tests, random blood sugar tests, ECGs, EEGs, and blood pressure checks.
Several activities are also organized at schools and colleges to encourage youth to choose and devote themselves to the medical field.
