Good morning, everyone!

Today we all are gathered here to celebrate the International Day of “non-violence” and the birthday of a man who helped bring forward the notion of non-violence. On the occasion of International Day of Non-Violence, created by the United Nations in 2007, we look back on the influence of an Indian activist and great philosopher named Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi but known worldwide as Mahatma Gandhi. The International Day of Non-Violence is celebrated to pay honor to Mahatma Gandhi and to remember how Gandhi’s work and legacy have impacted global and non-violent protests. This day is mainly dedicated to spreading the message of non-violence and a peaceful approach to as many people as possible in all countries of the world.

The United Nations has a brilliant reason to use Gandhi’s birthday to celebrate the International Day of Non-Violence. Gandhi Ji’s commitment and approach to India’s independence and his peaceful methods have been the foundation of civil and human rights initiatives taken worldwide. Simply, Gandhi Ji saw it as completely unreasonable to use violence to achieve peace and independence, but rather, he gives us the lesson that “just means lead to just ends” that we can all take to heart.

Gandhi Ji used a nonviolent approach to independence which eventually overthrow the Britishers, who ruled India at the time. Despite being thrown in jail many times and being tortured by British officers, nothing ever caused Mahatma Gandhi to abandon his peaceful approach. His non-violence disobedience eventually resulted in India finally gaining the independence it had wanted for years.

The independence of his country India was not the only issue Gandhi Ji found important, moreover, he was also severely interested in expanding women’s rights, he worked for women’s empowerment and awareness of education, and he believes in building good relationships between people of different religions and ethnicities, also he worked with some political leaders and nationalist to reducing the amount of poverty in India. Even though he was liquidated by a Hindu nationalist and freedom fighter in 1948, he has never been forgotten and is called “the father of the nation” by most Indians.

As International Day of Non-violence and the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi are celebrated on the same day, people in different countries celebrate it in different styles. One of the best ways to honor Mahatma Gandhi’s life and achievements, as well as those of other world leaders and freedom fighters who have won their battles without any kind of violence, you could choose one of these leaders and read their biography—find out what motivated and inspired them to act like this, what makes them feel to adapt peace instead of violence for freedom, what kept them strong and sustain even when they saw abominable things happening all around them. As Gandhi has said once, “Non-violence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man”. We must understand what is right and what is wrong for society, we need to understand that any sort of revenge is violence and it is bound to bring sorrow for the doer.

Nowadays, people are developing an understanding of nonviolence principles and which are the focal point of most contemporary protests.  Also, people of the world are becoming the source of change through the power of nonviolence and peace, they are adopting non-violence methods to live a sustainable life, such as passive resistance, civil disobedience, and pacifism speech meetings. Non-Violence is equivalent to moral courage even if it is more than that. This is something that makes the creed of non-violence practical, active, and creative. Gandhi Ji’s non-violence method for freedom is a Hebraic attitude toward life.
