The 12th July is designated as World Malala Day to honor Malala Yousafzai.
The day also recognizes the rights of women and children around the world.
We celebrate this day in honor of the young girl who was attacked for advocating for girls' education as well as to support her endeavor to make quality education available to all girls worldwide.
With Gul Makai's pen name, Malala has been advocating for girls' education since she began blogging for the BBC at age 11 about life under the Taliban's rule in Pakistan.
She was severely injured by a Taliban gunman as she walked home from school after being enraged by this.
In order to keep her safe from the militant group, her family moved from Pakistan to Birmingham, England.
She soon returned to public prominence and continued advocating for gender equality despite the attack.
In addition to co-authoring the international bestseller "I Am Malala", she founded the Malala Fund to help young girls attend school.
Malala became the youngest Nobel Peace Prize recipient ever in 2014.
