Heinrich Zimmermann, a German author and publisher, founded World Animal Day on 4 October 1929 to raise awareness about animal welfare. 

History of World Animal Welfare Day

The original organizer of World Animal Day was a German writer named Heinrich Zimmermann (1887-1942), who also published a bi-monthly magazine. In his magazine, Mensch und Hund / Man And Dog, he promoted his views on animal welfare and established the World Animal Day Committee. 

Heinrich Zimmermann organized the first Animal Welfare Day at the Sports Palace in Berlin, Germany, on 24 March 1925. The first event was attended by more than 5,000 people. This event was originally scheduled for 4 October to coincide with Saint Francis of Assisi’s feast day, but the venue wasn’t available that day. First observed on 4 October in 1929, World Animal Welfare Day was moved to 4 October in 1930. As a result, today World Animal Day is celebrated worldwide in support of animals. A World Animal Day website was launched by the Naturewatch Foundation in 2003.
