Heinrich Zimmermann organized the first Animal Welfare Day at the Sports Palace in Berlin, Germany, on 24 March 1925. The first event was attended by more than 5,000 people. This event was originally scheduled for 4 October to coincide with Saint Francis of Assisi’s feast day, but the venue wasn’t available that day. First observed on 4 October in 1929, World Animal Welfare Day was moved to 4 October in 1930. As a result, today World Animal Day is celebrated worldwide in support of animals.
