World Music Day and Its History
In 1982, the French instituted World Music Day. Joel Cohen, an American musician, came up with the idea for International Music Day in the 1970s. On the evening of the 21st June, he wanted live music played to welcome the first day of summer. A French composer and a music journalist, Jack Lang and Maurice Fleuret, joined France’s Ministry of Culture in 1982 and encouraged amateur and professional musicians to celebrate music together. Regardless of heritage or background, they wanted live music to be accessible to everyone. The first Fête de la Musique (World Music Day) was born.
Over the course of the year, the first celebration was held in the streets of Paris, and it became a huge success. Global Music Day was first celebrated in 1997 when a charter was signed by the European Party of Music in Budapest.
In recent years, World Music Day has become a worldwide celebration. Enjoyable by all.
