World Rainforest Day 2022: We cannot survive without the rainforests. Providing fresh water and keeping our climate stable, they are home to half of the world’s animal species. Each second, one and a half hectares of rainforest are lost, while 78 million hectares are wiped out every year. World Rainforest Day was created to raise awareness of the need to fight deforestation, reduce global warming impacts, and protect the world’s rainforests.

World Rainforest Day Theme 2022

The theme of World Rainforest Day 2022 is “The Time is Now“. We must do our utmost so that the rainforest can live longer, which is the need of the hour. Various initiatives are driving this effect.

What is Rainforest?

Rainforests are areas of tall trees, mostly evergreen, and heavy rainfall. Some rainforests have survived in their present form for at least 70 million years, making them Earth’s oldest living ecosystems. Although they cover just 6% of Earth’s surface, they are amazing in their diversity and complexity, containing more than half the world’s plant and animal species.

In fact, rainforest patches can contain up to 1,500 flowering plants, 750 species of trees, 400 species of birds and 150 species of butterflies in just a 10-square-kilometer area. Rainforests are found on every continent but Antarctica.

History of World Rainforest Day

The Rainforest Partnership first created World Rainforest Day in 2017. With local communities, they help restore and regenerate healthy rainforests by working with Indigenous Peoples living in rainforests. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness about the rainforest and what it provides for us. Taking action on this day enables us to protect the rainforest and ensure its longevity, as the rainforest has provided our own lives for thousands of years.

World Rainforest Day Activities

We can take action each day ourselves to protect the rainforest through hundreds of events, including local community events, online events, education initiatives in schools, and charity projects. Whatever rainforest approach you choose, whether you go solo or with friends, family, or colleagues, you will be a part of a worldwide community. Video resources, educational materials, and advice about conserving the environment are available on the World Rainforest Day website.

Throughout the day, staying positive and focusing on ways we can save the rainforest will be of the utmost importance. For thousands of years, our rainforests have kept us alive and ensured our water is clean and fresh. They circulate oxygen, keep local communities alive, and absorb carbon dioxide.

What is the role of the Rainforest Partnership in saving rainforests?

The Rainforest Partnership’s main focus is to save the rainforest by using community-based rainforest-based projects and creating a positive impact on local people and wildlife. While they have offices in Texas, the majority of their work is done in the rainforest in Latin America.

What has made the Rainforest Partnership so successful?

As a result of its partnership with organizations worldwide, it is transforming deforestation into a global movement. What Rainforests are Significant?

Rainforests have existed in the Amazon basin for around 60 million years and formed when the Atlantic Ocean expanded sufficiently to create a tropical climate. There is evidence that a moister climate developed after the dinosaur extinction, leading to the expansion of the rainforest. There is a theory that the rainforest underwent many reductions and expansions over the course of millions of years, due to factors like expanding and contracting glaciers.

Why are Rainforests So Endangered Now?

Deforestation has many causes, including logging, mining, and industrial development, as well as clearing land for agriculture. Forests are cleared to make way for logging and pasture, resulting in the need for more infrastructure and road clearance. With the removal of more rainforests, the habitats of wildlife and the homes of Indigenous Peoples are also being disrupted more and more. Deforestation on this scale can lead to climate change, flooding, desertification, and soil erosion—all things that threaten our planet and our way of life.

How to Celebrate World Rainforest Day?

It’s the perfect time to help protect the homes of the native wildlife of the rainforest. Share on social media and blog about how you can save the rainforests to provide an optimistic outlook on preserving the planet. Participate in virtual events and networks, donate or raise awareness of charities such as the Rainforest Partnership.

You can organize your own rainforest awareness day by organizing an event that illustrates the cause or donating to a rainforest protection charity. Consider organizing a sponsored walk, run, climb, or trek to raise money if you don’t like organizing events. Also, you can find registered charity tree planting programs where you can plant a tree to give back to the rainforest. Consider taking advantage of the activity packs on the website for the day to engage your children and share these with your friends and family.

The day is also an opportunity to make eco-friendly choices and help save our rainforest if you’re looking to change your lifestyle. Deforestation caused by agriculture is one of the major reasons for rainforest destruction. By making sure you purchase and use only the food you need, you can reduce food waste. You can also help protect the environment by buying goods from ethical companies that donate to it.

In addition to conserving global biodiversity, helping your local wildlife can help some migratory birds on their homeward journey. If you have a garden or balcony, plant insect-attracting flowers to share some love with our feathered friends as they return to their tropical climates. We have the opportunity to show our appreciation for our rainforest by taking many small steps or by hosting a big event on this day.
