Good morning, everyone, today on the occasion of World Ozone Day, I would like to pay my gratitude to my teachers, seniors, and friends who have given me a chance to present my views on this important topic. Do you know, why we celebrate ozone day on September 16 every year? What is the importance of this day?
Well, the main purpose to celebrate International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is to spread awareness among people about the depletion of the Ozone Layer and search for possible solutions to preserve it. First, it is important to have an idea about what the ozone layer is and why it is so important for human life. The ozone layer or we can say ozone shield is a region of Earth’s stratosphere that absorbs most of the Sun’s ultraviolet radiation. It contains a high amount of concentration of ozone (O₃) in other parts of the atmosphere. The ozone layer is very important to protect human life, as it absorbs most of the ultraviolet radiation reaching the earth from the sun. Without the Ozone layer in the atmosphere, life on Earth would be challenging. Plants cannot able to live and grow in heavy ultraviolet radiation, nor can the plankton serve as food for most of the ocean life. Because of the weakening of the Ozone Layer shield, humans would be more susceptible to skin cancer, cataracts, and impaired immune systems.

But there is an important point that we need to keep in mind. Ozone can both protect and harm the Earth, it all depends on where it resides. For example, if the Ozone layer is present in the stratosphere of the atmosphere, it will act as a shield. However, if it is present in the troposphere (about 10 km from the Earth’s surface), Ozone is harmful. In the troposphere, it is a pollutant that can cause damage to lung tissues and plants. Hence, it has upset the ozone balance and can have serious consequences. Most of the ozone stays within the stratosphere whereby it acts as a shield and protects the surface of the Earth from the harmful ultraviolet radiation of the sun.
To protect the ozone layer, in 1994, the UN General Assembly signed 16 September as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. In 1987, the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was signed which is an international agreement used to protect the ozone layer. It was designed to stop the production and import of ozone-depleting substances and to reduce their concentration in the atmosphere to help protect the earth’s ozone layer.

The Montreal Protocol is considered the most successful environment protection agreement made in 1987. It sets out to be an obligatory timetable for the phase-out of ozone-depleting substances. This timetable has been reviewed regularly, with phase-out dates accelerated by scientific understanding.
The government of each country is taking necessary steps to protect the ozone layer, but did you know that there are several different things that we can also do to protect the ozone layer? Like, such as minimizing the use of vehicles. You can also avoid the use of some cleaning items that are harmful to us and to the environment at the same time. A lot of people do not realize that many cleaning products on the market today contain substances that are corrosive and solvents too, and these dangerous substances can be replaced with products that are not toxic to the environment, such as bicarbonate or vinegar. There are several other things that we can do to protect the ozone layer.
