Short Biography of Sir M Visvesvaraya

M Visvesvaraya was born on September 15, 1861, in Muddenahalli village in Karnataka. After completing his schooling in his hometown, he studied at the University of Madras for his Bachelor of Arts (BA). After graduating, he changed his career path and studied civil engineering at the College of Science in Pune.

His career included multiple complex projects and excellent infrastructure results. Visvesvaraya was popularly known as Sir MV. In 1903, he patented and installed an irrigation system with water floodgates at the Khadakvasla reservoir near Pune to raise the level of food storage and supply. This was known as the Block System.

Moreover, one of the largest reservoirs in Asia at that time was created at Gwalior’s Tigra Dam and Mysuru’s Krishnaraja Sagara (KRS) dam.

From 1912 to 1919, Sir MV was not just a great civil engineer but also the 19th Diwan of Mysore, an expert in irrigation techniques and flood disaster management. King George V awarded him the ‘Knight’ title as a commander of the British Indian Empire in 1915 while he was serving as the Diwan of Mysore.

He was instrumental in spreading awareness of engineering disciplines, as well as in establishing Government Engineering College in Bangalore in 1917. Later, the college was renamed to University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) after him.

As a result of his contributions to the building of India, the government awarded him the highest honour possible, the Bharat Ratna, in 1955.

Google launched a Doodle on his birthday in 2018 to honour his genius work that led Tata Steel engineers to create a bullet-proof armoured vehicle used during WWII. Despite Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya’s passing in 1962, his achievements and contributions are still celebrated.
