Against the backdrop of significant loss of life and property caused by cyclones in the North Indian Ocean region, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations (UN) jointly initiated the establishment of the WMO/Economic & Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (ESCAP) Panel on Tropical Cyclones (WMO/ESCAP PTC) in 1973. This crucial step aimed to safeguard lives and assets from the destructive impact of cyclones that frequently affect countries in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea regions. The panel currently comprises 13 member countries, including Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Pakistan, Iran, Oman, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Yemen.
In the same year, 1973, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) was entrusted with the responsibility of serving as the WMO-recognized Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre, located in New Delhi (RSMC New Delhi). Its primary role is to provide advisories regarding cyclonic disturbances that develop in the North Indian Ocean. As we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the formation of WMO/ESCAP PTC and RSMC New Delhi, it is worth acknowledging their significant contribution in reducing cyclone-related fatalities to double digits in the region over the past few decades. To mark this occasion, IMD is conducting a quiz competition aimed at enhancing public awareness about various aspects of tropical cyclones in the region.
The primary objectives of this quiz competition include:
Raising awareness about tropical cyclones in the North Indian Ocean region.
Promoting an understanding of the importance of regional cooperation among member countries of the WMO/ESCAP Panel on Tropical Cyclones.
Highlighting various initiatives undertaken by IMD to minimize loss of life in the region due to cyclones.
