  • May 11, 1999 was the first time the day was observed. It was chosen because India formally entered the exclusive club of nuclear states on this day. The Indian Army’s Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan conducted three successful nuclear tests on 11 May 1998. “Operation Shakti” was the codename for these tests.
  • On May 13, two more nuclear tests took place. India’s eleventh president, A P J Abdul Kalam, led all the tests. DRDO, BARC, and the Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMDER) carried out the mission with assistance from the Indian Army.
  • India conducted its second nuclear test in Pokhran after its first in 1974, code-named “Smiling Buddha”.
    The first indigenous aircraft in India, the Hansa-3, was also tested in Bengaluru on May 11, 1998. The aircraft served as an aerial surveillance platform, a pilot training aircraft, and a reconnaissance platform.
  • Trishul, India’s surface-to-air missile, was also successfully tested on May 11. As part of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme of India, the tests were conducted by the (DRDO). This missile was subsequently used by the Indian Army and Navy.

The day was declared National Technology Day due to all these technological advances. Seminars and workshops are held by the Ministry of Science and Technology on this day. As part of the ministry’s Technology Development Board, innovations that supported national growth are honored.
