A proposal for UN World Ocean Day was first made at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. To address ocean issues and conserve ocean water, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared June 8 as World Oceans Day in 2008. After a year, the UNGA officially declared the day in Resolution 63/111.
